Hike America Pennsylvania
Published in Paperback by Globe Pequot Pr (May, 2001)
Average review score:

Mostly short hikesThe book is mostly on hikes of less than 10 miles. It is divided into sections of PA and each section has some hikes for wildlife, scenery and good views from ridges. I'd have liked some 50 mile hikes, though. If you've been hiking in your section for a few years, then I would look elsewhere for information (you've probably been on most of the trails mentioned).

Hikes & Walks in the Berkshire Hills (Berkshire Outdoors Series)
Published in Paperback by Berkshire House Pub (April, 1998)
Average review score:

Hikes and Walks in the Berkshire HillsThe guide is clear and descriptive. It provides levels of difficulty as well as a time table for each hike or walk. I recomend it to anyone who will be visiting the Berkshires for extended periods of time and really enjoys getting outside. Great for those who live in Boston or other urban areas of eastern Massachusetts and want to explore the other side of the state on weekends.
There is one complaint. In my opinion the walks in the book are a waste of space. They may be suitable for the disabled or catch the eye of the wealthy that visit Stockbridge and Lenox..But overall a joke...
If you are not great with maps and figuring out your own hikes from topo then this is your book...Your only book... The William College Outing Club in Williamstown, Massachusetts also has a nice guide. I believe you can get it over the internet thru the college website. Visit the Berkshires...Buy a book..Go for a hike!

Hiking the Pioneer Valley : 25 Circuit Hikes in the Connecticut River Valley Region of Western Massachusetts
Published in Paperback by New England Cartographics (December, 1996)
Average review score:

Good Book Covering a Small AreaAlthough there are only 2 dozen trails described, the author provides very good trail descriptions and directions to the trailhead. Repro's of USGS maps for the trails are included but are a little hard to read because of their reduced size. Still, all-in-all, I recommend it.

Hippocrene U.S.A. Guide to Black New York
Published in Paperback by Hippocrene Books (February, 1994)
Average review score:

Enjoy New York City from an African-American perspectiveThis is a great guide. It briefly describes the history of African-Americans in New York City, and highlights cultural sites in each of the boroughs. It also lists information about annual events, books, organizations, and media. Some items may be outdated. Be sure to call ahead before you venture out, so you really enjoy the vast amount of places to go and things to do.

Home Landscaping in the Northeast and Midwest
Published in Paperback by H.P. Books (March, 1985)
Average review score:

Home Landscaping in the Northeast and MidwestThis book is excellent because it gives detailed information about various types of landscaping plants. For example, how fast they grow, how tall and wide, even if they have poisonous parts. (This was important to me as a parent with young children.) It gives you the good and bad of each plant. It also informs the reader of which types of plants are best for spring, summer, fall, and winter so your yard will look great all year long.

IgoUgo Travel Report: New York : The Inside Scoop from Experienced Travelers
Published in Digital by IgoUgo (02 January, 2003)
Average review score:

All Around the TownWhile I like to surf the IgoUgo website in general, I liked this guidebook because it took the best of the suggestions from the seemingly thousands of journals posted for this destination and put them into an easy-to-read format making a great mini-guide I didn't have to work for. In addition, unlike some guidebooks, this is a cover-to-cover read. I found the hardcopy great for highlighting where I wanted to go while still on the airplane. I loved what one writer said about NYC: "All in all, if Manhattan were a lady, she'd be irresistably sexy." The "After Dark" information here with real people reviews of clubs and restaurants is the strongest section.

The Insiders' Guide to Michigan's Traverse Bay Region--1st Edition
Published in Paperback by Globe Pequot Pr (June, 1998)
Average review score:

good & detailed descriptions of things to do,go,& stayThis book was the only source that I could find that would provide such detail on things to to do in the Traverse Bay Region. It lists tons of resteraunts, lodging sites, and things to do (very detailed social night life section). I only wish they would rate the lodge sites and resteraunts. That may have been a tall order though, considering how many they list.

Insight Guide New York City (Insight City Guides)
Published in Paperback by APA Productions (June, 1900)
Average review score:

Handy Simple Guidebook, Good For NYC NewbiesI bought twenty-five of these and gave them out to twenty-five out-of-town (Midwest) couples that I hosted for a bus tour of NYC on the day after my daughter's wedding. I wanted something nicely printed and not too expensive with good photos that would serve to help my guests remember their day in the City. There were lots of choices on the shelves of .... , where I made my selection before ordering from Amazon. This book seemed to fit my needs best. Insight publishes a larger version of this same guide; and I had that in my pocket as I played tour guide.

Into the Mountains: Stories of New England's Most Celebrated Peaks
Published in Paperback by Appalachian Mountain Club Books (September, 1995)
Average review score:

Read this before Hiking in New EnglandThis book prepares you a bit for what is to be expected in the New England mountains. If you are hiking on the Appalacian trail or doing hikes up the various peaks in New Hampshire, Vermont or Maine ,then you will want to read this first. It tells of mishaps (including several deaths), and of terrain and weather conditions of the various peaks. An example is Mt. Washington in New Hampshire , where the bad conditions are second only to those of Mt. Denali in Alaska. If this book doesn't scare you out of hiking in New England, then it will definetly prepare you for what lies ahead!!! Good Luck to all of you who take the challenge and hike these peaks!!!
